24 November 1859: Darwin Publishes Origin of Species
On November 24, 1859, Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, a book that would fundamentally transform our understanding of life on Earth. The first edition of 1,250 copies sold out on publication day.
Darwin had developed his theory over twenty years since his voyage aboard HMS Beagle. During that journey, he observed remarkable variations in wildlife that suggested species were not fixed and immutable.
The theory of natural selection was elegant: organisms produce more offspring than can survive, there is variation among individuals, and some variations provide advantages. Over time, this explains the diversity of life.
Religious leaders condemned the book as blasphemy. Scientists debated intensely. Yet within a decade, the scientific community had largely accepted evolution as fact.
Today, evolution by natural selection remains the central organizing principle of biology, explaining everything from antibiotic resistance to species distribution.
