04 February 2004: Facebook Launches

On February 4, 2004, a Harvard sophomore named Mark Zuckerberg launched a website called “TheFacebook” from his dormitory room in Kirkland House. What began as a social network exclusively for Harvard students would grow into one of the most influential and controversial technology companies in history, fundamentally changing how billions of people around the world communicate, share information, and connect with one another.

Zuckerberg, working with his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, created the site in just a few weeks. The platform allowed Harvard students to create profiles, upload photos, and connect with classmates. Within 24 hours of its launch, between 1,200 and 1,500 Harvard students had registered. The rapid adoption demonstrated an immediate demand for digital social connection among college students.

The website expanded quickly beyond Harvard’s campus. Within a month, it had spread to other Ivy League universities, and by the end of 2004, Facebook had nearly one million users across dozens of American colleges and universities. The company dropped “The” from its name in 2005 and opened to the general public in 2006, setting the stage for explosive global growth.

Facebook’s impact on society has been profound and multifaceted. The platform revolutionized how people maintain relationships across distances, share life events, and discover news and information. It created new forms of community building and political organization, playing significant roles in movements from the Arab Spring to various social justice campaigns. For businesses, Facebook became an essential marketing and advertising platform.

However, the company has also faced intense scrutiny and criticism. Concerns about user privacy, the spread of misinformation, the platform’s effects on mental health, and its role in political polarization have led to government investigations, congressional hearings, and calls for regulation worldwide. The company, renamed Meta in 2021, continues to navigate these challenges while expanding into new technologies like virtual and augmented reality.

Twenty years after its creation, what started as a college directory has evolved into a global communications infrastructure used by nearly three billion people monthly. The founding of Facebook on February 4, 2004, represents a pivotal moment in the digital age, marking the emergence of social media as a dominant force in modern life and raising fundamental questions about technology’s role in shaping human society.
