19 May 1536: Anne Boleyn Executed at the Tower of London

On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England, was executed at the Tower of London on charges of adultery, incest, and treason. Her death marked a dramatic turning point in English history, removing a queen whose marriage to Henry had precipitated the English Reformation.

Anne Boleyn had captivated Henry VIII in the mid-1520s, and his determination to marry her led to one of the most consequential political crises in European history. Unable to obtain a papal annulment of his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Henry broke with the Roman Catholic Church, establishing the Church of England with himself as Supreme Head.

Anne and Henry married secretly in January 1533, and she was crowned queen in June of that year. However, Anne’s failure to produce a male heir quickly soured the relationship. She gave birth to Princess Elizabeth in September 1533, but subsequent pregnancies ended in miscarriage or stillbirth. Henry, desperate for a son, grew increasingly impatient.

In April 1536, Anne was arrested and charged with having adulterous relationships with five men, including her own brother George Boleyn. Modern historians generally consider these charges to be fabricated, orchestrated by Thomas Cromwell to provide Henry legal justification for ending the marriage.

After a swift trial, Anne was found guilty and sentenced to death. On the morning of May 19, she walked to a scaffold erected on the Tower Green, where a French swordsman had been specially imported to carry out the execution. Anne maintained her composure, delivering a brief speech praising King Henry before kneeling for the fatal blow.

Anne Boleyn’s legacy far outlived her brief reign. Her daughter Elizabeth, whom Henry had declared illegitimate after Anne’s execution, would eventually become Queen Elizabeth I, ruling England for forty-five years and overseeing a golden age of cultural and imperial expansion.
