15 May 1940: First McDonald\x27s Restaurant Opens in San Bernardino, California

On May 15, 1940, the first McDonald’s restaurant opened its doors in San Bernardino, California, beginning what would become one of the most remarkable business success stories in American history. Brothers Maurice Mac and Richard Dick McDonald started with a simple barbecue restaurant, never imagining their creation would grow into the world’s largest fast-food empire.

The original McDonald’s Bar-B-Q offered a varied menu typical of roadside restaurants of the era, including barbecued ribs, beef, and pork sandwiches. However, the brothers soon recognized that hamburgers accounted for the majority of their sales. In 1948, they made a revolutionary decision to strip down the menu and introduce a new Speedee Service System.

This innovative approach transformed the restaurant industry. The McDonald brothers designed their kitchen like an assembly line, with each worker performing a specific task. Food was prepared in advance and kept warm, allowing customers to receive their orders in seconds rather than minutes. The system also allowed the brothers to lower prices dramatically.

The efficiency and profitability of the McDonald’s system attracted the attention of Ray Kroc, a milkshake mixer salesman who visited the restaurant in 1954. Amazed by what he saw, Kroc convinced the brothers to let him franchise the concept nationwide. In 1961, Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for 2.7 million dollars and set about building an empire.

Under Kroc’s leadership, McDonald’s expanded rapidly across the United States and eventually around the world. The company pioneered many practices now standard in the fast-food industry, including standardized recipes, rigorous quality control, and aggressive advertising campaigns.

Today, McDonald’s serves approximately 69 million customers daily in over 100 countries, operating more than 40,000 restaurants worldwide. The Golden Arches have become one of the most recognized symbols on Earth, representing not just a business but a cultural phenomenon that has shaped how people around the world eat.
